Some of its main physical characteristics are that it has a very low hardness and breaks with light pressure, while it also has a very low specific gravity.

However, this mineral has a very high heat resistance, is self-lubricating. It is capable of behaving like a metal to conduct electricity but also as a thermal insulator under certain conditions.

Properties and uses of mineral graphite

Because of its incredible properties mineral graphite has a myriad of applications in industry, but some of the main ones are:

  • As a lubricant. One of the properties of mineral graphite is as a solid powder for dry lubricants which are widely used for example in doors and locks, but also on a large scale in the brake shoes of train wheels, etc.
  • One of the main uses of mineral graphite is in pencil lead. The more graphite the pencil core contains, the softer it is and the darker the line.
  • In the glass industry because graphite is perfectly resistant to thermal shock and is a lubricant, it is used for parts that are in contact with hot glass bottles and ensures that the material does not stick.
  • In the metallurgical industry for crucibles and molds for molten metals. Among the uses of mineral graphite, its contribution to the manufacture of a large number of engineering parts such as bearings, gaskets, pistons, washers, etc. stands out.
  • Due to its ability to conduct electricity, it is widely used in electric brushes for electric motors.

Once the mineral graphite is extracted from natural deposits it is taken to the crushing plant to reduce the size of the mineral and dry it by removing the moisture.

The mineral or natural graphite is classified as crystalline (which can be flaky or in vein) and amorphous, which is microcrystalline. This division increases the uses of mineral graphite, the crystalline as refractory, paints, crucibles, lubricants and batteries. Amorphous graphite is widely used in foundries, plastics, electrodes, as an alloy to increase the carbon content in steel, and in motor brushes.

On the other hand, synthetic graphite is also used in the foundry process, in electrodes, in the aerospace industry, fibers, etc.

In the drying process is when the amorphous graphite comes out, used in a great variety of lubricant products. Once the graphite has been classified and dried, it is then milled, where the particle size is further reduced, either dry or in water suspension. If crystalline graphite is used in this process, it then passes to the flotation process.

At this point impurities are separated from the graphite for eventual classification. It is then sent to hoppers according to its morning and packed or bagged according to its size and carbon content.
