Types of lubricants and their applications according to industry

There are several types of lubricants, however, they all fulfill the function of reducing friction in machinery depending on the industry. As a consequence, they guarantee a good performance and a long service life of the machinery.

Therefore, today we are going to know what they are, what are the types, their benefits and the different industries where lubricants are used.

What is a lubricant?

It is a greasy or oily substance that aims to facilitate sliding between two surfaces that have constant friction between them, to reduce friction, wear and any type of failure that may occur from this interaction.

In addition, they are used for cooling, sealing, obtaining uniform movements and transmitting power. So, what are lubricants used for, apart from what has already been mentioned, they are also used for:

  • Correct operation
  • Prevent damage in the short and medium term
  • Reduce the heat produced by the machines
  • Reduce costs due to damage or repairs

Types of lubricants and their characteristics

When choosing a lubricant, you have to know what it is going to be used for and take into account: temperature, viscosity, friction and operating conditions.

The types of industrial lubricants ensure top-quality operation and extend the service life of the equipment. Below, we will mention the lubricants you can choose according to your requirements:

  1. Aerosols:Aerosols are used for maintenance tasks. They are very easy to use, apply and are also perfect_for instant lubrication.
  2. Liquids: they are prepared with mineral, synthetic, semi-synthetic and vegetable bases.
  3. Hydraulic oils: the purpose of a hydraulic oil is to protect, lubricate and facilitate the transmission of power in the best way.
  4. Pastes: they are used in cases where the temperature can reach 1200ºC and the machine has slow movements. They can be used as assembly paste, separation paste, release paste or as high temperature pastes.
  5. Coatings: are used for extreme loads and consist of an adhesive, a solvent and a solid lubricant.
  6. Greases: are used when machines have various temperature, speed and load ranges. They can also be used in dry, humid, corrosive, dusty, etc. environments.
  7. Solids: are used in machines with mixed friction (solid and fluid), the lubricant is dry and works in extreme conditions.

It should be noted that, in solid lubricants, there are different types of lubricants such as molybdenum disulfide, polytetrafluoroethylene and finally graphite in different presentations.

In this case, the lubricants with graphite in their respective presentations, are resistant to high temperatures, weather resistant and do not burn, depending on the vehicle used.

Industrial uses of graphite lubricants

Graphite lubrication is used in machinery where ordinary oil or grease lubricants do not reach. For example in burnout and baking ovens. As well as in applications where grease or oil could present a source of contamination to the final product.

They are also used in the manufacture of aluminum tubes in extrusion processes, in paint shops or baking lines, as a general release agent and in physical vapor deposition chambers. In the transport industry, they are particularly used in railways and trains, in open gears as well as for the transport of automobiles in wet cars and wagons.

The development of the aeronautical, civil, construction, transportation, energy, agri-food and medical-pharmaceutical industries, among others, has boosted the development of lubricant types, especially those made up of graphite particles. The types of lubricants that exist today are an indispensable tool to maintain the processes in the industry.

In ESGRAF we are developers and producers of several lines of graphite lubricants in different vehicles. In this way we cover a wide range of applications offering a Mexican product and in accordance with the requirements of our customers.
