Spheroidal graphite cast iron - in which industries is it needed?

Cast irons are a group of ferrous alloys that have a large number of properties and have above 2% carbon. In these cases the carbon does not dissolve completely in the iron and solidifies in the form of graphite or iron carbide. One of the types is spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular cast iron.

Spheroidal graphite cast iron - in which industries is it needed?

Cast irons are a group of ferrous alloys that have a large number of properties and have above 2% carbon. In these cases the carbon does not dissolve completely in the iron and solidifies in the form of graphite or iron carbide. One of the types is spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular cast iron.

Basically the classification of the types of castings depends on the state in which the graphite is found and the structure of its metallic matrix. In gray castings, for example, the graphite forms sheets, i.e. lamellar graphite castings.

However, it was from 1948 onwards that a spheroidal graphite cast iron, ductile or nodular, began to be manufactured. This means that the graphite was no longer crystallized in sheets but in spheres, eliminating possible ruptures.

The concentration of graphite into nodules is achieved by the introduction of a small amount of magnesium, in a controlled manner, into the base function from which the sulfur was previously removed.

Spheroidal graphite cast iron combines the advantages of cast iron with those of steel, obtaining high yield strength, toughness, toughness, good wear resistance and hot formability.

The composition of spheroidal graphite cast iron is very similar to that of gray iron, but the difference is that the levels of phosphorus and sulfur must be kept in proportions below 0.03%. The nodules or spheres are formed when the cast iron solidifies due to the incorporation of magnesium at the time of casting.

This causes the elimination of sulfur and oxygen residues that may remain in the liquid metal. To this, silicon in the form of ferrosilicon must be added to encourage graphitization

What are the advantages of this smelting?

As mentioned above, because it contains a high level of carbon, spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular graphite cast iron retains the mechanical properties of traditional cast iron such as compressive strength, abrasion resistance and fatigue resistance, but it is also machinable and suitable for molding.

But due to the crystallization of graphite into nodules, this cast iron adds tensile strength, shock resistance, high yield strength and high elongation.

Due to these properties, nodular cast iron is used for the manufacture of pipes, fittings and other accessories for water supply. It is also used for the manufacture of parts requiring dynamic stresses such as brake discs, crankshaft shafts, etc.

Due to its resistance to wear, this cast iron is essential for parts and elements of machines and engines in general, as well as for structural parts and for the support of the shaft in the manufacture of wind turbines.
