Industrial Processes: Graphite as an indispensable element for aluminum production

The aluminum industry requires graphite for the realization of different processes in order to transform its raw material into functional objects. Here is a list of some of the steps that require the use of graphite.

Industrial Processes: Graphite as an indispensable element for aluminum production

Nowadays there are several industrial processes, however, today we are going to focus on those carried out for the aluminum industry. By means of the industrial processes, an endless number of products are made efficiently, optimizing time and resources to achieve it.

Phases of the industrial processes

Industrial processes are a set of specific operations used to modify the characteristics of raw materials, such as: shape, density, strength or size of the material. The stages of an industrial process are listed below:

  1. Contact with and handling of the raw material.
  2. Conditioning work to transform the raw material in question.
  3. Transformation process, which depends on the product and its purpose.
  4. Separation of the raw material to turn it into product.
  5. Creation of the final products.

Industrial processes in the aluminum industry The aluminum industry requires graphite for the realization of different processes in order to transform its raw material into functional objects. Below, we list some of the steps that require the use of graphite:

  • Degassing This process is carried out by means of two elements: the type of degassing agent and the injection medium. Therefore, graphite parts such as fluxing tubes or graphite injection lances contribute to this process. These products are used for purification or slag removal in aluminum smelting.
  • Casting Various graphite components such as pourers, plates, tubes and rods can be used for casting molten aluminum. The non-stick, lubricating and high temperature resistant properties of graphite offer improved metal handling.
  • Pouring As in casting, weirs, crucibles and components are used for better molten metal handling. Graphite molds are used for the production of final parts, which offer non-stick properties and excellent finishes.
  • Extrusion It is a process that aims to mold the aluminum, either in the form of tubes, bars, or profiles so graphite extrusion dies are manufactured to extrude the metal in a malleable state through the die cavity, giving it its final shape.

As a result

We can say that graphite is indispensable in various processes, and a great ally in the aluminum and foundry industry in general.

ESGRAF is a specialist in all types of graphite products. We have a wide range of graphite grades in stock for immediate or scheduled deliveries thus reducing the costs of stopping a production line in the metallurgical and aluminum industries.
