Graphite applications in the metallurgical industry

The development of the metallurgical industry is vital for the economy of our country since it converts raw material, product of mining extraction or scrap and transforms these elements to give them new life.

Graphite applications in the metallurgical industry

The metallurgical industry is involved in the creation, transformation and processing of various metals. In doing so, it creates a myriad of products used in other industries.

The development of the tallurgical industry ivital to our country's economy as it converts raw material, the product of mining or scrap mining, and transforms these elements to give them new life.

Importance of the metallurgical industry

In addition to the above mentioned about economy and extraction, the metallurgical industry is of great importance because:

  • It concentrates ores or by-products for later use in other processes.
  • By transforming metals, it makes them profitable.
  • Through metallurgy, pure metals such as tin, lead, antimony, etc. are extracted.
  • It manufactures and processes parts of different materials used in the metal-mechanic industry, construction, etc.

It is important to mention that graphite or anthracite plays an important role as a smelting additive to increase the carbon content in steels.

In addition, the different solid presentations of graphite, such as plates and bars, are used for the handling of molten material. Among other applications, graphite is used as spillways, troughs or as a protective barrier in refractory brick vessels.

The characteristics of graphite and its numerous applications make it an important input for the metallurgical industry.

Graphite in metallurgical processes

There are different applications of graphite products and derivatives in the metallurgical industry in general. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • aphite powder Iis used as an additive for the integration of refractory bricks needed in metallurgy.
  • Solid graphite rods and tubes are used for the elaboration of chutes and troughs for molten metal handling.
  • Powdered graphite is useful for the creation of pastes or mortar for casting and handling molten metal.
  • Solid graphite plates are used as protective barriers in refractory brick vessels or for the construction of troughs and pans.
  • Graphite molds and crucibles Used for handling precious metals.

One of the great vantages of graphite in handling molten metals idue to its self-lubricating properties. This property reduces metal accumulationn channel walls or provides a demolding effect.

In addition, there are other applications such as for the production of sintering molds, drill pipe molds, plates and molds for inert gas welding and/or exothermic welding.

Other special carbon graphite products, such as rigid and flexible felts, are used as thermal insulation, to reflect thermal radiation. These are commonly used as furnace components for heat treatment.

The metallurgical industry plays an important role for the technological development of the country. It is an important economic indicator and therefore a sector of great weight due to its direct or indirect influence with other sectors.
